Science Lab Matters
The inaugural year for the Science Lab is in full swing for our 5th and 6th grade students. We introduced Laboratory in English this year to as to build a comprehensive laboratory science education program and to increase overall student achievement.
Our students are now discovering what it means to think like a scientist and are becoming more comfortable with the idea of a science subject taught entirely in English. It’s important to build upon a child’s innate curiosity for the world around them and to guide them toward a more concrete understanding of the natural world. Since children are surrounded by science in their everyday lives, it can be motivating to learn more about the subject with a hands-on approach through our laboratory class.
Thinking about everyday items opens the door to learning. This year they have experimented with the humble potato learning about enzymes and catalysts. They also learned how much taste can be influenced by other sensory information by experimenting with a jelly bean taste test. In laboratory students always have the opportunity to ask questions, make observations and gather information about simple problems that they would like to help solve. They are learning about laboratory techniques and safety, hands-on experimental design, and data analysis and interpretation.
Our goal is to help our students make even tighter connections to the natural world in meaningful, mindful, and engaging ways.
